Up – Floating Houses and Talking Do[u]gs

Our second review takes us to Paradise Falls. This beautiful and lush area in South America should be a paradise! Or not. Carl Fredricksen, an over-70 year old, is a cranky old man. His wife died, who he was married to forever. Some crazy hooligan named Russel comes around and threatens this old man’s repu- oh wait. Russel, a little ‘Wilderness Scout’, comes to this guy’s house to get his Helping the Elderly badge. Carl tells him about a Snipe. Blah blah blah the next few days are bad with court and stuff, and Carl has to go to Shady Oaks Retirement Village. That is where the movie ends, and his house just floats away.

Nah. So two guys come the next morning to take him away. Carl was a balloon blower-upper and seller, so he did that and his house magically floated away. Russel was on it, they go through a thunder storm, some funny sequences occur, and magically they are in Paradise Falls. They meet a dog named Doug, Russel finds the snipe, which is actually an exotic bird an old Charles Muntz the Explorer is looking for. They find Charles, dogs are evil with squeaky voices, and such.

Spoiler time. Charles Muntz goes nuts for the bird, a dog bites Kevin, Charles falls off the blimp and this implies his body gets skewered by trees and splatters everywhere. Happy ending, right?

This was a fantastically made movie, with funny characters and sequences. The story is a bit too sad to be a kids movie, and things don’t make sense that often. about 1,000 balloons ripping a house from its foundations? No. The animation was great, and this is a very enjoyable movie. Out of 5 stars, 4.5. Out of 10, 9. Out of 100%, 91%.

This was a very awesome review by Alex V.
